invincible? kinda good [COMIC SPOILERS]

March 23, 2025

So, after being a fan of the Amazon Prime show for 4~ years, I finally read the comic series. Here are my thoughts

Comic Spoilers: These thoughts will spoil the entire series

[COMIC READERS ONLY]

Viltrumite History

  • I have YET to be able to clearly understand the sequence of events as they happened on viltrum.
  • I get that
    • Argall assassination
    • War
    • Virus released
    • Viltrumites sent all around
  • But I cannot understand the timeline
  • How did Thragg not find out who Argall’s child was if there were only 50 people who all knew eachother? I’m sure they had 23andMe?

Virus plotline

  • This had very little impact outside of giving us a reason the viltrumites were such a small group and establishing fear in the reader. It literally didn’t get used on a single person in the story.

5 year timeskip while in the past (what even was this?)

  • Creating suffering for no reason (Spider-Man/Chainsawman flashbacks)
  • Drive a wedge between Mark and Eve.
  • In the end, it doesn’t affect the plot at all (I guess it gave time for Thraggs babies to grow up.)

Nolan freed Thragg just for him to do the obvious and be bad.

  • I’m not saying you had to execute him, however he should not have been freed. There was no logical reason to do so.
  • Thraggs twins had unreal swag. Where do you get a bald fade in space?

Mark freed Dinosaurus just for him to do the obvious

  • He eventually just agrees that he’s bad?
  • I can’t even imagine what Mark was thinking by freeing Dinosaurus. I was gutted when I saw the result.

The sheer amount of infidelity (or something similar) plot lines in this series

  • Robot/Amanda
    • I genuinely hate this plot line. There was absolutely no reason to do this. I understand her betraying him (even this was dumb) but why did she have an ogre baby? Cmon bro…
  • Rex/Kate
    • Why are they cheating with the homies? Cmon bro…
  • Mark/Eve
    • Eve being in a relationship with an anti-family, child-hating alien playboy was absurd. Rage bait.
    • Them not being able to commit to the plot point and have her seriously be with someone else permanently so this just looks like it was made to hurt Mark? Cmon bro we suffered enough by this point.
  • Mark/Anissa (this one was weird)
    • Why does Markus exist?
    • Do they hate Markus? (Terra/Eve/Mark). At least Debby and Markus are best buddies for sure.
    • This needs to be addressed in the tv series. How was it growing up with his adoptive father? His adopted father was a great guy from what we see but how does this create a wedge between him and Mark?
    • Why did no one tell Mark he had a child? Were they THAT unaware of the amount of viltrumite children? He clearly wasn’t his adoptive father’s biological son😭

Robot: but what if a fascist dictator was efficient?

  • Obviously it’s a fictional story but being that these stories arcs are written to make us think about certain topics, I don’t even think this was portrayed well enough. I think the story makes his regime look far too nice, to the point where the characters actually question whether it makes sense to overthrow him. Any society run that way would not have those outcomes and it would’ve been obvious he should be overthrown. But I get that it’s a fictional story made to stir up discussion and whatnot so I can suspend my disbelief.
  • His way of descending down this path was a bit convoluted. I think the idea is that he started down this path by overthrowing the Zaxals may be a bit much. I may have to take his side on this because Zaxals basically are the equivalent of early series viltrumites. I genuinely don’t understand the argument against keeping the Zaxals out of power. It just looks like Amanda sided with them … because she wanted to? But perhaps this entire thing is a setup for his later regime on earth.
  • Robots later descent into madness was just sad 😔 poor Amanda and poor Teen Team/Guardians. I’m not going to be able to deal with this one when it inevitably is brought to the television series.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good franchise. I do want some filler content to flesh out the story a bit more (Markus, Dinosaurus backstory, Viltrum empire timeline). I also really appreciate the focus on side characters like Rae, who is now a fan favorite. I am still also debating whether I see a happy ending for Amanda in the show (I don’t know how she would be able to find a partner and start a family while explaining to them why she’s lugging an ogre around everywhere. But this is a cartoon after all!)

All in all

I think Invincible is a pretty good series and has aged rather well. There are some things that I think need to be changed (stated above). But overall, I think this is a good foundation for a classic show.

I love discovering a new franchise to have among my favorites. One nice thing about being a reader is that you'll never run out of things to read.

Anyway that's it for now.
